Activities

National Honor Society

HBA students who are part of the NHS are committed to leadership, scholarship, service, and character. Each Spring, students who meet the requirements contained within these pillars are inducted in the HBA’s chapter of NHS. Members get involved in community service, tutor peers, and set an example for academic integrity.

Members for the 2022-23 school year include: Anna Brown, Cindy Cai, Sen Chan, Shray Chatragadda, Audrey Li, Nakul Mehta, Holden Nguyen, Elvis Tang, Julien Vashisht-Rota, Saina Vijay.

ASB

The school year started and ended with a BBQ, games, and pool party, so what’s not to like about being at HBA?? Throughout the year ASB also organizes Spirit Weeks (teams get very competitive!), holiday and cultural events, a hike on Earth Day, and last year we had a pumpkin decorating contest and no-hands pie eating contest (messy but delicious!).

Quiz Bowl

In 2021, students started a Quiz Bowl Club, joining the National Academic Quiz Tournaments organization. Two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more, using a buzzer system. The club meets weekly during lunch with both students and staff joining in the lively competition!

Elie Wiesel Writing and
Art Competition

Each winter, students enter the Elie Wiesel Writing and Art Competition by composing essays, poems, or visual art pieces on topics surrounding issues of social justice. The competition is named in honor of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. The contest receives thousands of entries, and in the past two years HBA students have won prizes for poetry and visual art, and entries are displayed in a virtual art show. https://holocaustcommission.jewishva.org/home-page/elie-wiesel

Community Service

Students and staff had fun working together during 2021-22 to raise funds by selling student-made jewelry and baked goods for Build a Miracle, an organization that builds homes for low-income families in Tijuana. Students sold student-made jewelry and baked goods. We also held coin and book drives to support Hands Across the Hemisphere; a toy drive for Toys for Tots (and helped the Marines sort toys); a clothing drive for Casa Hogar Maria Immaculada in Tijuana, and a school supply drive for Build a Miracle.

Literary & Art Magazine

Each Fall and Spring, students publish an art and literary magazine with original content. Prospective content is collected and then uploaded to Canva for creative compilation into a colorful magazine that is distributed in print and online.

Social Media and Yearbook

Who knew HBA could be so fun? Seems the students in charge of social media! Check out HBA’s TikTok and Instagram for evidence!

You can also take a look at the 2021-2022 yearbook to see what we’ve been up to.
